Richard Ellin started the Terra Nova label in 1995. His idea was to release contemporary artists at a budget price, hence the labels well known slogan “affordable discoveries”.
Richard tried to emulate what other companies had done in the classical market by maintaining a consistent style. Unfortunately he overlooked the fact that many premier classical labels had names such as Mozart, Chopin, and Brahms whilst his label had people who although in music circles were acknowledged professionals they were hardly household names. However encouraged by the success of Terra Nova artists such as Nick Harper, Artisan and Les Barker, Richard began think about a setting up a full price label.
It was around 1999 when a friend and business associate John Garrad asked Richard if he wanted to take over Osmosys Records which had risen out of the label Plant Life.
Osmosys had a really interesting artist roster with names such as Dougie Maclean, Blowzabella and Maddy Prior. It seemed the perfect musical partner for Terra Nova and so Richard agreed to acquire Osmosys Records.
On completing the deal John happened to mention to Richard that he may get phone calls enquiring about “Redbush Tea” which is a relatively little know caffeine free beverage from South Africa
Apparently John Garrad had been involved with a tea importer who used to have access to the old Osmosys office and phone line.
This was very strange coincidence because at the Terra Nova offices they were buying Red Bush Tea in bulk albeit on a smaller scale to help a friend who was stocking a newly leased shop.
What were the odds of two record labels coming together who dealt in any kind of tea let alone a specialist such as this one? This is the story behind our sampler’s unusual title.
This album features tracks from most of the original releases together with the new signings since Richard Ellin took control of Osmosys Records
'It's time for the label to have its first showcase' said Richard Ellin, ' Things have shaped up well over the years and we now have a good eclectic mix of releases ranging from English Traditional and world music to left field pop.'
By keeping the retail price to around £5.00 for 17 tracks', continued Ellin ' We will hopefully be able to take this a little further than our normal market.
